Maui November 1, 2014

On the morning of 1 November we checked out of the Papakea and took Jenna to the airport for her 1:00 pm flight to Jacksonville, Florida. Since our flight to New Zealand was not until 10:00 pm we spent the day in Lahaina. There was an art and craft fair in Lahaina so that along with the many shops kept us busy. We had a great time in Maui and especially enjoyed sharing the time with Jenna and Bill and Marla.

The Lahaina Banyan Tree was planted in 1873 to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Protestant Mission in Lahaina. Since then it has grown from 8 feet to close to sixty feet and spreads out to cover over a two hundred foot area. The Banyan Tree has grown so large by dropping roots from its branches and then these roots become additional trunks over time. It is hard to get a decent picture of the Banyan Tree because it is so huge. The Banyan Tree shades two thirds of the two acre area that is Courthouse Square in downtown Lahaina.

Lahaina Harbor.

Stopped at a small roadside beach on drive to airport. Great time in Maui and now headed to New Zealand on 10:00 pm flight.
